BrainSTEM Learning Canada Corp. — Video Game Design

My son, who’s 12 and quite focused, recently attended the Video Game Design program at BrainSTEM Learning Canada in Vancouver. He was excited to learn about game mechanics and even created a basic platformer by the end of the session. The instructor, named Mark, was really engaging and encouraged the kids to brainstorm ideas before jumping into coding, which I appreciated. The small group size allowed for personalized attention, which my son thrived on. However, I did notice they spent quite a bit of time in front of screens, which isn't always ideal for him. Pickup was pretty smooth, though a little confusing at first, but overall, we had a positive experience. I'd recommend this program for kids interested in game design, but just be mindful of the screen time.

Each week, they tackled different aspects of game design, and my son came home excited about the levels he created and the characters he designed. The small group size allowed for personalized attention, which I appreciated. However, the drop-off process was a bit chaotic at times, with parents crowding the entrance. Overall, I think it’s a solid program for kids ages 11-13 who are interested in gaming and design. My son made a couple of friends who share his passion, which is a bonus. I would recommend it, but be prepared for some initial hustle during drop-off.
