I recently enrolled my 12-year-old son in the Sports Plus Day Camp's Video Game Design program in Portland, and overall, we had a solid experience. The instructors, particularly a guy named Jake, were very engaged and genuinely excited about the projects. My son spent the week designing a platformer game, learning not just about coding but also about story development and character design. The small group size allowed for a lot of individual attention, which he appreciated. One drawback was the amount of screen time involved; while I understand it’s a computer-based program, I felt they could have incorporated more outdoor breaks. Also, the pickup process was a bit chaotic, with a long line and not enough clear signage. Still, my son came home every day buzzing with ideas and even made a few friends in the process. All in all, I recommend this camp for creative kids who are passionate about gaming, but just be prepared for some screen-heavy days.
