Before you pay a deposit, a fifteen-minute conversation with the camp director tells you more than any brochure. The goal isn't to interrogate — it's to hear whether they answer fluently and specifically. 1. What's your staff-to-camper ratio for my child's age group? For kids who need extra support, look for closer to 1:4 to 1:6. - Good answer: a specific number, plus how it changes during swimming or unstructured time. - Bad answer: "We have great ratios" with no number, or not knowing it.

2. How do you hire and train staff? - Good answer: national fingerprint-based background checks covering counsellors, CITs, volunteers, and contractors; CPR/first-aid certified; multi-day pre-season training; named senior staff with multiple summers of experience. - Bad answer: "Our counsellors are great college kids" with no screening detail.

3. What's your staff retention rate? - Good answer: a meaningful share returns year over year. High turnover is worth asking about.

Safety and protocols

4. How are medications stored and administered? You want a clear protocol and a named person responsible.

5. What's your protocol when a kid is struggling or homesick? - Good answer: a calm-down space, a named adult, a "try it for 72 hours" plan, and parent contact. For homesickness, expect the camp to treat it as normal and coach staff for it. - Bad answer: "We discipline them" or "they sit out."

6. Do you have a written emergency plan, and what's your water-safety setup? Both should be answerable in writing — evacuation, severe weather, lifeguard certifications and in-water ratios if swimming is involved.

7. Are you accredited or licensed? ACA accreditation is a useful signal (the camp meets hundreds of standards), though a strong non-accredited camp can still be excellent. Licensing status should be a clear yes/no.

Fit, references, and money

8. How do you group campers (age, experience, temperament)? Tight age bands matter — a 6-year-old and a 12-year-old have wildly different experiences in an "ages 6 to 12" camp.

9. Can you share two parent references from last summer? No references is a run signal. Good camps share them happily.

10. What's your refund, switch, and cancellation policy? Get it in writing before you pay. Kids change their minds and plans change; a rigid no-refund policy on a 2,000-dollar camp is worth understanding up front.
