Steamoji Calgary North — Video Game Design

My son has been attending the Steamoji Calgary North Video Game Design program for the last few weeks, and so far, it’s been a solid experience. The instructor, Jake, has been great at engaging the kids and making the lessons fun. My son has already created a simple platformer game, which he proudly showed us at home. The small group size really allows for personalized attention, and I can see my son’s creativity blossoming. However, I did find the pickup process a bit chaotic; there were quite a few parents all waiting at the same time. It’s not a dealbreaker, but it could definitely be improved to make it smoother. Overall, I’d recommend this program for kids who are interested in video games and like to create. Just prepare for some waiting at the end of the session.

However, I did notice my son spending a lot of time on screens, which raised a bit of concern for me. While I understand that digital design is the nature of the program, I'd prefer a bit more balance with hands-on activities. Still, he came away excited about what he learned and even made a couple of friends along the way. I would recommend this program with the caveat to keep an eye on screen time.
