My 12-year-old son recently attended the after-school Video Game Design program at Calgary Game Developers Academy for Youths, and overall, it was a solid experience. The instructor, Jake, really engaged the kids and encouraged them to explore their creativity while using the Unreal Game Engine. My son came home excited to show off the 3D level he designed, which was a proud moment for him. One thing to note is the program does lean quite a bit into screen time, so for parents concerned about that, it’s worth considering. The small class size meant that Jake could give individual attention, which I appreciated. The pickup process was smooth, but I did notice a few parents were confused about the timing. Despite this minor annoyance, I would recommend this program for kids interested in game design. It’s a fantastic way for them to blend their passion with practical skills.
