Brooklyn Game Lab — Coding

My 9-year-old attended the Brooklyn Game Lab's coding class this past semester, and overall, it was a solid experience. The instructor, Mia, was particularly engaging and made learning fun. Each week, my child was excited to share what they built—this time, it was a simple game using Scratch. I appreciated the small group size, which allowed for more individualized attention. However, I did notice that some activities involved a bit too much screen time for my liking, and I wish there were more hands-on, offline projects interspersed. Pickup was straightforward, but it could get a bit chaotic with kids running around. Nonetheless, my child made a couple of friends, which was great to see. I would recommend this program, but maybe encourage other parents to discuss screen time limits at home.

My child loved building a simple video game and could not stop talking about the new coding concepts they learned. The small group size helped ensure that everyone got attention, which I appreciated. However, I found the pickup process a bit chaotic at times, with many parents arriving at once. It would be great if they implemented some sort of staggered pickup to ease the congestion. Nevertheless, my child is excited to continue and is already asking to create more games. I would recommend this program for kids who are creative and eager to dive into coding.
