NewTechKids — Video Game Design

I enrolled my 9-year-old in the NewTechKids Video Game Design program in Amsterdam, and overall, it was a positive experience. My child was really into the creative projects, especially when they got to design their own character and storyline. The instructor, Jeroen, was engaging and really encouraged the kids to think outside the box. I also appreciated the small group size, as it allowed for more individual attention. One minor annoyance was the amount of screen time involved; it felt like a lot for a weekly program. While I understand it's part of the design process, I would have preferred a bit more hands-on, non-digital activities. However, my child left each session excited and inspired, which is the main goal. I’d recommend this program, especially for kids who love gaming and creativity, but just be prepared for some screen-heavy sessions.

The instructors, like Mia, were clearly passionate about game development, and they managed to keep the kids engaged through hands-on projects. My son really enjoyed designing his own level using simple coding techniques. It was great to see him so focused and excited about his creation. One downside was the long lines during pickup; we often waited over 20 minutes, which was frustrating after a long day. Additionally, the program could benefit from better communication regarding what the kids will be learning each week. Still, I believe it’s a solid program for kids interested in tech, and my son made a friend who shares his interests. I would recommend it to other parents, just be prepared for a bit of wait at the end of the day.
