My son attended the Filmkamp — Video Game Design program in Amsterdam this summer, and overall, it was a solid experience. The instructors, especially a guy named Joris, were enthusiastic and really engaged the kids in the process of game design. My son built a basic platformer game that he’s quite proud of. I appreciated the small group size, which allowed for more personalized attention. However, I did notice that they spent quite a bit of time in front of screens, which I'm always hesitant about. A little more balance with hands-on activities would have been nice. Pickup was relatively smooth, but it could get a bit crowded at the end of the session. Despite these minor issues, I would recommend it for kids aged 11 to 13 who have a creative flair and an interest in technology. My son made a few new friends and was excited to share what he learned at home.

My son attended the Filmkamp Video Game Design program in Amsterdam, and overall, it was a worthwhile experience. He really enjoyed creating his own character and game levels during the weekly sessions. The instructor, Lara, was very engaged and took the time to explain concepts clearly, which helped my son develop his skills. The small group size allowed for more personal attention and collaboration with peers. However, I did notice that the kids spent a lot of time on screens, which was a bit concerning. While I understand that it’s part of the design process, a bit more balance with non-screen activities would be beneficial. The pickup process was organized, making it easy for us to get in and out. Despite the screen time issue, I would recommend this program to parents looking for creative outlets for their kids.
